Surface and gradients
Floor flatness, joints, ramps, dock levellers, drains and debris affect what a mobile robot can do and how reliably.
Application 05 / 06 · Planning guide

The buyer question
Warehouses and factories are full of repeated movements: pallets between dock and racking, cartons onto pallets, parts into and out of machines. The best first project is the task that repeats most, varies least and hurts most when it falls behind.
A collaborative robot is not automatically safe, and a mobile robot is not automatically suited to your floor. Each application needs its own risk assessment. This guide explores the questions; it does not offer a particular model.
Floor flatness, joints, ramps, dock levellers, drains and debris affect what a mobile robot can do and how reliably.
Map forklift routes, pedestrian walkways, blind corners and intersections. Agree the rules before the first trial.
Decide how jobs are created, how the robot knows where to go, and how loads are transferred at each end, by people or by conveyors.
For a fixed robot, start with payload, reach and the end-of-arm tooling needed for your items. Grippers, vacuum tooling and fixtures often shape the project more than the arm itself.
Decide early whether the cell will be guarded or designed for collaborative operation. Either way, an application-specific risk assessment under the applicable machinery and robot safety standards, together with guarding, controls and emergency stops, is part of the system, not an afterthought.
A robot cell or fleet becomes part of your plant. Establish who integrates controls, PLCs, conveyors, sensors and software; who owns the data; and who maintains the system once it runs.
Designers, manufacturers, importers, suppliers, installers and workplace operators each hold duties under work health and safety law. A supply agreement, assessment or training does not remove them. Put responsibilities in writing before commissioning.
Compare equipment with tooling, guarding, integration, site works, software licences, training, spare parts and servicing in Australia. Ask for a proposal that separates upfront and recurring costs and states GST and exclusions.
| Measure | What it helps establish |
|---|---|
| Completed cycles | Throughput on your actual items and packaging, not the demonstration parts. |
| Stops and recoveries | Why the system stops, how often, and how long a trained person needs to restart it. |
| Quality | Damage, misplacement and rejects compared with the current method. |
| Upstream effects | Whether the task before or after the robot now waits on it. |
What to include in your enquiry
Send the site type and state, the task, the items and their weights and sizes, volumes and peaks, the floor and route or the cell location, existing equipment and systems, and the outcome you want to improve. Include a budget range if you have one.
